16 Years Later Big Pun’s Capital Punishment Remains As One Of Hip-Hop’s Most Underrated Albums

big_pun-capital_punishmentApril 28th, 2014 will mark the 16 year anniversary of the release of Big Pun’s classic debut album “Capital Punishment”.

At the time of this release expectations were pretty high.  The single “Still Not A Player” was getting major radio rotation and things were looking pretty good.  The album was received very well, and actually topped Billboard reaching #5 on the on the Billboard 200.  It was also #1 on Billboards  Top R&B Albums.

Not bad for a guy from the Bronx and his first album.

“Capital Punishment” went on to be nominated for a grammy in 1999. Although he didn’t win, the album was a success selling well over 1 million copies and cementing Big Pun in recording history as the first Latino solo rapper to go platinum.

Being part of this album, laced with so many classic tracks was like a dream come true.  Pun put together a dream team of collaborators to make the best possible debut he could.  The effort paid off big time with relentless lyricism, storytelling and a blend of beats tied up neatly into this album.

Unfortunately,  Capital Punishment would be the only album Big Pun released in his lifetime.

Big_Pun_Capital_Punishment_Platinum PlaqueDespite all the success of this album and all of the history it created, Capital Punishment remains as one of hip-hops most underrated albums.  When hip-hop classics are mentioned rarely is Capital Punishment in the conversation.  Maybe its just too lyrical?  Or maybe the album went over their heads?  Either way, 16 years later it hailed by some as a masterpiece.

We’re proud to have been a part of hip-hop history, and glad we had the opportunity to work with Big Pun extensively.  His talent was undeniable and the opportunity he gave us (he was our first major release) will always be greatly appreciated, and remembered for years to come.

Thanks Pun.
