What Is Music Industry Bullsh*#?

We decided to do this column as a dedication to the current state of the Music Industry. We want people to understand that we love this business, because it’s what we love to do, and it provides for our families, but we hate the bullshit that comes along with it. Some of you might ask, what is Music Industry Bullshit? The easiest way to describe it is when “politics” gets in the way of creating great music and doing business in this industry.
We will define “politics” as emotionally charged decisions as it relates to business which adversely affects the outcome of any particular musical work or business deal.
“Politics” example: Rapper A, calls Rapper B to feature on a song together, Rapper B agrees, does the song, it’s a hit! Now its, time to shoot a video and Rapper B wants to get paid to appear in a video for a song he/she agreed to do for free. Of course now Rapper A is offended as the song would not only benefited him but also Rapper B as he/she would have a video/record being promoted that he/she did not have to pay for.
This is a prime example of “politics”, but we like to call it Music Industry Bullshit.
If you’re a new artist or producer looking to get into the game, this here is for you. This guide should not be used to replace competent legal counsel. Its intended use is to assist you in navigating through an industry that tends to capitalize off of the uninformed. We are just sharing information in regard to our experience within the music industry and hopefully you will be able to avoid some of the common errors that people striving to get into the industry make.
With the information here you will be able to avoid arrogant artist, malicious managers, lying lawyers, asset stealing accountants, asshole A&R reps, extreme executives, greedy groupies, pompous producers and many other pitfalls of the music industry. We’ll update the column every now and then between projects. By the time you’re done with this you’ll be able to identify everything related to what we like to call Music Industry Bullshit…
